Professional Organizations

American Institute for Conservation (AIC)
(AIC) exists to support the conservation professionals who preserve our cultural heritage. As the only national membership organization in the United States dedicated to the preservation of cultural material, the AIC plays a crucial role in establishing and upholding professional standards, promoting research and publications, providing educational opportunities, and fostering the exchange of knowledge among conservators, allied professionals, and the public.

Book Arts Guild (BAG)
Formed in Seattle in 1979, the Book Arts Guild is the largest and longest-living book arts group in the United States. The BAG membership base is comprised of bookbinders, conservators, paper makers, paper decorators, calligraphers, and many others who are involved with the making of books.

Heritage Preservation (HP)
This website offers great information on disaster preparedness and emergency response, as well as a long list of links to other heritage organizations, government agencies and resource organizations.

Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC)
NEDCC's strengths are the outstanding credentials of its conservation and preservation staff, the Center's wide range of services, and the willingness of its staff to advise clients about their specific needs and requirements. NEDCC treats many highly significant paper and photographic objects and continues to be the premiere center for the most difficult conservation challenges.

Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA)
The PPFA is a professional trade organization for the custom framing industry establishing best practices for framing and providing programs and services for entrepreneurial success. The organization serves over 2,000 frame shops, art galleries, and suppliers around the world.

Society of American Archivists (SAA)
Founded in 1936, the Society of American Archivists is North America's oldest and largest national archival professional association. SAA's mission is to serve the educational and informational needs of more than 5,000 individual and institutional members and to provide leadership to ensure the identification, preservation, and use of records of historical value.

The Image Permanence Institute (IPI)
Rochester Institute of Technology has developed this website devoted to scrapbook and home archives preservation. Included at this site are a very useful glossary and a Preservation Calculator (a downloadable program which can be used to estimate photo, scrapbook, and memorabilia longevity based on the average temperatures and humidity in which these objects are stored).
